Believing that physical therapy should empower clients to take ownership of their recovery and long-term wellness, Dr. Makena works to help each patient understand their whole body, build long-term resilience, and move with confidence.
She aims to give her patients the tools, knowledge, and support to take charge of their own recovery and stay active for life. Dr. Makena is also passionate about decreasing the burden on the health care system by teach her patients the keys to good lifelong health.
Dr. Makena has worked with a variety of sports teams, including the UMass men’s ice hockey team during its first run at the Frozen Four in program history. She fell in love with the rehabilitation process, keeping athletes doing the things they love most. Dr. Makena has experience with patients across physical therapy disciplines, including in orthopedics, neurological, and pelvic floor physical therapy.
Dr. Makena completed her undergraduate degree in athletic training at Springfield College in Massachusetts and received her doctorate from Elon University in North Carolina. She was certified as a nutrition coach through the National Academy of Sports Medicine, and she’s currently pursuing a second certification in nutrition. Dr. Makena previously worked with contact and non-contact sports in collegiate and high school athletics.
When Dr. Makena isn’t at work, you can usually find her in the gym or at a local coffee shop. She was part of the powerlifting team in college, though she never competed. She’s always looking for recommendations of favorite local coffee shops and breweries!
Dr. Makena empowers ownership in recovery and emphasizes developing whole body resilience for long-term health and wellness.
