Diastasis Recti Rehab

Diastasis Rectus Abdominis (DRA), or diastasis for short, is the separation of the abdominal wall. During pregnancy, 100% of women will develop this at some point by the end of their pregnancy. However, the degree to which it persist is the variable factor. If never adequately addressed, an individual may develop a variety of symptoms later on in life such as chronic low back pain, hip pain, poor posture, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and more. Women who complain of having the “mom pooch” since having kids have persistent weakness to the deep core due causing a more prominent lower abdomen. To adequately address the weakness and the decrease in stability, one must properly strengthen the transverse abdominis muscle. If someone has tried to focus on their core and not seen results, often we find they weren’t targeting quite the right muscles or perhaps they weren’t doing the exercise in the most effective method. Additionally, doing exercises incorrectly can actually exacerbate the symptoms one may be experiencing.

At Treasure Valley Pelvic Health, not only will you receive a customized exercise program for your core, you will know you are doing the exercises correctly. We address other soft tissue restrictions that may perpetuate the diastasis and symptoms. You will leave knowing exactly what to do and how to incorporate the exercises into whatever exercise or recreational routine is important to you. Call us today to get started with restoring your core.

Moving Towards Menopause

As we continue through life, our hormones change and with that so can person’s pelvic health. Perhaps sex used to be comfortable but has progressively become less enjoyable due to vaginal dryness, decrease in tissue elasticity, change in blood flow and more. Many women will notice they will experience urinary leakage (incontinence) more frequently as they age. This is in part due to the muscle fibers decreasing in quality and quantity. However, just as with any other form of physical activity, the more you use it the better the function will remain. So to help regain control of those bladder urges, incontinence or whatever symptoms you’re experiencing, we will create a customized plan to help you strengthen the pelvic floor, improve your control, minimize aches and pains in order to minimize the effects of these changes from slowing you down.

General Pelvic Health Services

There can be several reasons why someone may be experiencing symptoms of pelvic floor dysfunction. Pelvic floor problems are not exclusive to women nor are they exclusive to pregnancy / delivery. Symptoms may arise because the muscles are too tight, and the person may not be able to relax fully. There may be gastrointestinal or surgical reasons for symptoms.

Some of the other, non-pregnancy related symptoms that are commonly addressed with pelvic health physical therapy includes the following:

  • Coccyx pain (coccydynia)
  • Constipation
  • Interstitial Cystitis
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Pain or Weakness following cancer treatments for pelvic organs (ovarian, cervical, prostate, bowel, bladder, etc)
  • Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)
  • Pelvic organ prolapse (bladder, rectum, etc)
  • Pudendal neuralgia
  • Rectal pain (levator ani syndrome, proctalgia fugax)
  • Symphysis pubis dysfunction
  • Urinary / Fecal incontinence
  • Urinary / Fecal frequency and urgency
  • Vaginal pain (vulvodynia, vaginismus, etc)
  • Vulvar vestibulitis
Additionally, there are several orthopedic aches and pains that may stem from problems related to the pelvis and its functions (chronic low back pain, sacroiliac pain, sciatica, hip pain, etc). To most effectively address these symptoms, the pelvic floor must be considered as well.
